Vacation is the time to let loose and have fun. But this isn't an
excuse to toss your diet and healthy eating habits out the window. Eat
everything in sight and you can easily add five pounds or more while
vacationing. If you've worked hard to shed excess pounds, you won't want
to undo all of your hard work on your vacation. These five tips to
having a healthy vacation can help you keep your healthy habits even on
your holiday.
1. Start your morning off right with healthy breakfast selections of lean protein and plenty of fruit. This is a healthier option than hitting the buffet each day of your vacation and loading up on bacon, pancakes, sausages and syrup. Ditch the pastries and keep it clean in the morning. Not only will you keep your calories at bay but you'll set the tone for the whole day. Beginning your day with a healthy start means you're more likely to continue that healthy regimen throughout the day.
2. Keep water with you at all times. Often times we think we are hungry when we are actually thirsty. This mistake leads to overeating for many people. In addition, soda and other caloric drinks can add hundreds of calories every day. Reserve these types of beverages for dinner and sip on water throughout the day. This can combat water weight and help you feel full longer.
3. Minimize Alcohol Intake. Everyone deserves a treat on vacation and a few drinks for dinner is acceptable and a great reward. It's not a good idea to go crazy with drinks all day or every day. Unfortunately, alcohol is a depressant and slows down your metabolism. In addition, alcoholic beverages are quite caloric and the calories will add up quickly when you're drinking all day. Keep the booze at a minimum. Not only will you feel better but your metabolism will thank you for it.
4. Move Your Body! To have a healthy vacation, incorporate vigorous exercise into your day. Perhaps the hotel or resort has a workout facility and if not, get out and walk or run the local area. This can be a great way to get out and into the local community you are visiting while burning calories at the same time. Vacation can also be the perfect time to try a local gym and even try a new class or specialty workout.
5. Plan Active Outings. Instead of sitting at the beach all day, plan activities that will have you moving throughout the day. Hiking, kayaking, climbing, biking, snorkeling and swimming are all great activities to engage in. Active outings are a great way to experience new things with friends and family while on vacation. You'll get a chance to see the area, learn something new and challenge your body at the same time!
Vacation can still be fun and feel like a departure from regular life without getting crazy with your nutrition and fitness regimen. It's important to adopt an overall healthy lifestyle. Vacation is a great time to reward yourself for all of your hard work but it is not a time to reverse any success you've seen from heating healthy and working out consistently.
